PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN TRIESTE
HOW TO GET AROUND THE CITY
Trieste may be a mid-sized city, but its public transport system is efficient, affordable, and easy to use, even for first-time visitors. Whether you’re hopping on a bus, admiring views from the historic tram, or walking through cobbled alleys, getting around Trieste is simple and enjoyable. Here’s everything you need to know to navigate the city with confidence.
Overview of Trieste’s Public Transport
Buses: Trieste Trasporti
The main public transport provider is Trieste Trasporti, which runs an extensive network of buses that cover the entire urban area, suburbs, and even parts of the Karst Plateau.
• Tickets: Single-ride tickets (€1.50) are valid for 60 minutes (24 on Sundays). You can buy them at newsstands, tobacco shops (tabacchi), vending machines, or via the official mobile app (TT App). On-board purchase is possible on some routes, by card.
• Day passes: If you’re planning to move around a lot, opt for a daily pass (from €3.35/day, but careful: the ticket lasts until midnight).
• Night service: Some lines run into the night, but check the schedule in advance, especially on weekends and holidays.
TIP: Bus 6 and 36 are particularly useful for tourists, as they connect the center with Barcola and Miramare Castle.
The Opicina Tram (Tram de Opcina)
This iconic tram is more than just public transport: it’s part of Trieste’s identity. Built in 1902, the Tram de Opcina is a hybrid of tram and funicular, climbing the steep hill from Piazza Oberdan to the village of Opicina.
• Scenic route: The ride offers breathtaking views of the city and the Gulf of Trieste, especially from the panoramic stretch near the Obelisco.
• Temporary suspension: Note that the service has been interrupted in the past due to maintenance. Always check its operational status before planning your ride.
TIP: If the tram is out of service, bus 28 and bus 4 provides a similar route to Opicina.

Walking & Micro-Mobility
Trieste’s center is very walkable. From Piazza Unità d’Italia to the Canal Grande, most main sights are within a 15-minute stroll. The Old Town, with its narrow alleys and hidden courtyards, is best explored on foot.
For longer distances or a bit of fun:
• Bicycles are available via rental apps (BiTs).
• Waterfront paths like Barcola and Molo Audace are perfect for walking, jogging, or scooting with sea views.
TIP: Wear comfortable shoes. The Old Town is hilly and paved with cobblestones.
Practical Tips
• Download the “TT App”: It shows real-time bus arrivals, route maps, and digital ticket purchase.
• Validate your ticket: Paper tickets must be stamped on board. Fines are issued for unvalidated or expired tickets.
• Check for service changes: During public holidays or local events, some routes may change. Info is usually posted on the app or at bus stops.
